Who is God? What is He like? How does He act? Can I trust His character? Is He really all I need?
The character of God is so complex. If we could really understand Him in our finite minds, then He wouldn’t really be God at all. We must be careful not to make our own god by defining Him by our own thoughts and desires. To worship and know the One true God, we must seek to know who He really is based on the only true source, the Bible.
The Bible is God revealing Himself to us. God wants us to know Who He is. He isn’t hiding. He is revealing Himself generally through His world and specifically through His Word.
So how can we really answer any questions about God’s character, especially when our experience or perspective doesn’t always line up with what we want to believe about God?
Study His Word.
Even our own perspective can be skewed by our limited knowledge, but God tells us Who He is through His Word.
What what first comes to mind when you think of God’s attributes?
For me, it is the phrase, “God is love” from 1 John 4:8. Then I think of His power, His goodness, and His forgiving nature.
I remember that God is compassionate and kind. He is creative and beautiful. He is jealous and just. He is wrathful and merciful. He is holy and awesome.
God is eternal and omniscient. He is omnipresent and unchanging. He is sovereign. He is Lord. He is the great I am.
Of course, we must take the whole counsel of the Word of God in context, but we can learn Who God really is by studying His attributes one by one as revealed in scripture.
Use a Bible concordance, search engine, or app. Choose one characteristic of God and read the related Scriptures. Consider the context. Ask God to show you more of this attribute in Scripture and as He relates to you.
Journey and journal. Praise and pray. Wonder and worship.
The more we get to know our amazing Heavenly Father, the more we will want to know Him, the more we will love Him, the more we will desire to serve Him, and the more we will share Him with others.
What attribute of God is most meaningful to you right now? I’m having trouble choosing just one, but for now, I’ll say compassionate. He has compassion on me and my family daily and shows it through His grace.
Remember, God is beyond our scope of understanding, but He wants us to know Him. Take time to meditate on at least one attribute of God today. Get to know Who God really is.
