Why do we need to show AND tell the gospel?
Think back to your school days.
Did you ever have a day for Show and Tell? I remember doing it once, but my kids have participated in a homeschool Show and Tell a few times.
Why is it necessary to both Show AND Tell?
Imagine bringing a rock to Show only. It might be a really cool-looking rock! The class could learn from looking at it, holding it, and feeling of it. The texture, color variations, and weight give some ideas about its significance. Many would probably enjoy the presentation.
What if your subject was the same rock for Tell only. You describe the color variation, texture, and weight. You also tell about how you found it in near the Colorado River while on vacation with your family. You share how it reminds you of your grandpa because you went rock hunting together that year.
Either presentation would be interesting to some more than others, but alone each gives an incomplete picture. When you Show and Tell, the participants gain a much clearer understanding of the physical form of the rock and it’s significance in your life. They understand why you chose it for Show and Tell!
Child of God, the Gospel must be a Show AND Tell experience if we are going to reach the world with the message of Jesus shown in our broken-restored lives. Absolutely, we must live in such a way that others see Jesus in us. Matthew 5:16 urges us to let our light shine so others may see our good works and glorify our Heavenly Father. But, we must also proclaim the gospel so others will understand not just why we do what we do and live how we live, but also how to have eternal life by grace through faith in Jesus our Savior and Lord.
We need a Show and Tell, gospel-in-the-real-world, faith.
- When others see us going through struggles, let’s tell how faith in Jesus is helping us through.
- When they see our life is good, let’s tell them about the undeserved favor God has given us in Jesus.
- When the world sees us fail, let’s show them how we get back up again and tell them about God’s forgiveness and restoration through Jesus.
- When they see us living a life of integrity, let’s tell them how Jesus forgave changed our lives and will do the same for them.
Preach the gospel, and, as is necessary, use words.
The most memorable sermons are lived and shared in authentic joys and sorrows of true followers of Jesus living in a fallen world. Remember, dear child of God, we don’t have to be perfect to lead others to Jesus, but we must be living in repentance and faith as we show AND tell the world the gospel of Jesus.
